Gaston County NC property taxes: quick answers
- Who handles the bill? The Gaston County Tax Office appraises property and collects property taxes. Look up a parcel or pay a bill through the county's property tax search.
- When are taxes late? Gaston County says taxes become delinquent on January 6 each year. Interest of 2% begins January 6, then ¾ of 1% is added each month until the bill is paid.
- Is a reappraisal coming? Yes. Under We Value Gaston 2027, all property will be revalued as of January 1, 2027. Assessed value notices go out in February 2027 and tax bills in July 2027. Gaston now reappraises every four years.
- Is there tax relief for seniors, disabled owners or veterans? Yes. The county's homestead exclusion programs have a June 1 application deadline each year.
How a Gaston County property tax bill is figured
North Carolina taxes real property on its assessed value, which comes from the county's most recent reappraisal. The county applies its tax rate to that value. A city or town can add its own rate, and so can certain service districts, such as fire districts. Approved exclusions come off the taxable value first.
Two similar homes can still get very different bills. One might be inside Gastonia city limits and the other outside, or one owner might qualify for an exclusion. Look up the specific parcel instead of using a percentage from a listing or another county.
The 2027 reappraisal: what buyers and owners should know
Gaston County's next reappraisal uses January 1, 2027 market values. Property values have changed since the last reappraisal. A home's assessed value, and so its tax, can change significantly when new values take effect, even if the tax rate is later adjusted.
- If you're buying now, the seller's current bill reflects the old value. Ask what the home might be assessed at after January 1, 2027, and budget conservatively for the July 2027 bill.
- If you own a home, watch for the assessed value notice in February 2027. If you think the value is wrong, the county's appeals page explains the process and deadlines. Comparable sales near your home are the strongest evidence.
- If you're selling, expect buyers to ask the same questions. Having your property's details and recent improvements ready helps.

City taxes in Gastonia, Kings Mountain and other towns
A home inside one of Gaston County's 13 incorporated municipalities can carry a town or city tax as well as the county tax. A Gastonia or Kings Mountain mailing address doesn't prove a home is inside city limits. Use the county's GIS and tax mapping to confirm the parcel, then check the tax record for the rates that apply.
Kings Mountain is split between Gaston and Cleveland Counties, so confirm which county taxes the parcel first. Most of the city is in Cleveland County.
Tax relief programs in Gaston County
Gaston County lists three homestead programs. One application form (AV-9) covers all three, but an owner can use only one:
- Elderly or Disabled Exclusion: for owners 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled, who meet the state income limit. It excludes the greater of $25,000 or 50% of the home's assessed value.
- Disabled Veterans Exclusion: for honorably discharged veterans with a 100% permanent, total, service-connected disability, or an unmarried surviving spouse. It excludes up to $45,000, with no age or income limit.
- Circuit Breaker Deferment: for qualifying owners who have lived in the home for at least five years. Taxes above a share of income are deferred, accrue interest and become a lien.
Applications are due by June 1 each year, by mail or in person. Income limits change every year, so check the county's page for the current figures, or call 704-866-3158, ext. 6.
